I want to thank everyone who participated in the survey for the Saturday Evening Vigil Mass time. One of the most frequent requests I have received in my four and a half years in Stillwater, has been to consider moving up the time of this Mass. Some of you even suggested a survey. So that’s what we did. I have to admit, I was a little nervous doing the survey, because you are never sure exactly what you’re going to get. The results, however, were pretty clear, and it’s also something that Fr. Powers and I can both manage. With the majority of the votes, 53% of you asked for a 4:30 Mass, 23% asked that it remain at 5:30, and 22% asked for a 5:00 Mass (2% asked for a later Mass time, i.e. 6:00 p.m. or later).
My fear was that the votes would be too close to make a clear decision, but that’s not the case. Effective January 4th, the Saturday Night Mass will move to 4:30 p.m. We, of course, will still be in St. Mary’s until Easter. The logical adjustment for Confessions is to have them from 3:00 – 4:15. That will be the short term schedule. Due to the number of weddings that we have, however, after Easter, we will make an adjustment on that as well. So as to not bump into Wedding Masses that are typically concluding at 3:00, we will have confessions from 3:30 – 4:15… but with two priests! This will actually provide more confessions than the old schedule. The reason we are not implementing this immediately at St. Mary’s, is because there is only one confessional at St. Mary’s. We also have some temporary breathing room, because there are no weddings between January 1st and Easter. Hope that all makes sense! In short the schedule is as follows:
Until January 1: 4:00 Confessions, 5:30 Mass.
Between January 1 and Easter Sunday: 3:00 Confessions, 4:30 Mass.
Once we are back in St. Michael’s: 3:30 Confessions, 4:30 Mass.
